Cross-cultural variation in sexuality: An essential element for clinicians’ awareness

Abstract

There is a vast cultural difference in theexpression and practice of sexuality. Thisextends to variations in the degree ofacceptability of behavior that may havesexual connotations in the communities. It isneedless to emphasize that clinicians shouldbe mindful of these variations and beculturally sensitive while dealing with issuesrelated to sexuality. Understanding culturalnuances, expressions, expectations, boundariesof acceptable and non-acceptable sexualbehavior is key to successful clinical practice.It is preferable to draw attention to theseissues in order to raise awareness andstimulate debate.
