Abstract

The story of sexuality is as ancient as theorigin of humankind. Sexuality is portrayedas art, science as well as culture in theliterature. In human beings, the significanceof sexuality is not limited to procreation; itsolves the purpose of recreation andstrengthening relations (Kar and Tripathi,2018). Sexuality evolves across the lifetime.During different phases of life, cultureinfluences the development of sexualitysignificantly (Kar et al., 2015).Culture nurtures human beliefs, experiences,values, practices, behavior, language, andknowledge (Agocha et al., 2014). Culture helpsin providing common knowledge andexperiences to shape human behavior,including sexuality (Agocha et al., 2014).Cultures give a direction to sexual practicesand behavior. Sexual practices like -masturbation, homosexuality, sexualactivities during menstruation, contraceptivemeasures, celibacy, consummation ofmarriage, polygamy, polyandry, sexuallytransmitted diseases, and many other aspectsof sexuality are significantly colored by thecultural beliefs about sexuality. Religion playsan important role in controlling the sexualbehavior of people. Religions condemncertain sexual practices while allowingcertain other practices. The moral values setby society also regulate sexual behaviors andpractices.
